Igniting a Waterheater

Today, we’re tackling a common but essential task: lighting your water heater pilot light. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or a first-time homeowner, we’ve got you covered with this quick and easy guide.

Step 1: Safety First Before diving into any maintenance task, safety should always be your top priority. Make sure to turn off the gas supply to your water heater and allow any residual gas to dissipate before proceeding.

Step 2: Access the Pilot Light Locate the access panel covering the pilot light on your water heater. This panel is usually situated near the bottom of the unit and can be easily removed with a screwdriver or by hand.

Step 3: Set to Pilot Once you’ve accessed the pilot light assembly, locate the control knob and set it to the “Pilot” position. This prepares the system for lighting.

Step 4: Ignite the Pilot Light With the control knob in the pilot position, press and hold it down to release gas to the pilot light. Using a long lighter or match, carefully ignite the pilot light. Continue holding the knob down for about 30 seconds after the pilot light ignites to ensure it stays lit.

Step 5: Turn On the Gas Once the pilot light is stable, it’s time to turn on the gas. Rotate the control knob from “Pilot” to the “On” position to allow gas to flow to the main burner.

Step 6: Replace the Access Panel With the pilot light successfully lit and the gas flowing, securely replace the access panel covering the pilot light assembly.

Step 7: Check for Operation Congratulations! You’ve successfully lit your water heater pilot light. To ensure everything is working correctly, verify that the main burner ignites and that hot water is flowing as expected.

Final Thoughts While lighting a water heater pilot light is a relatively simple task, it’s essential to approach it with caution and care. If you encounter any difficulties or feel unsure about the process, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional plumber for assistance. Remember, safety always comes first when dealing with gas appliances.

These guys are great. They responded quickly and professionally to our need for a new water heater last spring and today when we called with a garbage disposal issue they gave me a tip over the phone to try before incurring the cost of a service call. It worked! They are our company of choice.

Had a water pressure and water heater issue. James and his son came out within an hour from calling. They were both super professional, honest and did great work. Most plumbers would have told me I need to change my water heater, but they were able to find the issue and all flowing back nicely. They have forever earned a client.

Excellent work by James and Casey. We had 3 complete faucet replacements done, 3 toilet water lines replaced, and 1 pedestal sink removed and a new one installed by Precision Plumbing. Always on time, took great care to do things the right way and their expertise and customer service were outstanding. We will always use them for any plumbing work from now on. Thank you guys for a terrific job! Gary & Sandy
